Welcome to the world of cloth nappies! Whether you're a new parent or looking to make a more eco-friendly choice, cloth nappies are a fantastic option. Here’s a simple guide to help you get started with using and washing them effectively.

**Step 1: Choosing the Right Nappy**

Start by selecting the right type of cloth nappy for your baby. At Bells Bumz, we offer a range of options, including newborn, birth-to-potty, and junior sizes. Consider natural fibers like hemp and bamboo for their absorbency and comfort.

**Step 2: Preparing the Nappies**

Before the first use, it's important to wash the nappies to remove any manufacturing residues and to increase their absorbency. Wash them separately from your regular laundry with any bio or non-bio detergent.

**Step 3: Putting on the Nappy**

Lay your baby on a changing mat and place the nappy under their bottom. Secure the nappy using snaps or Velcro, ensuring it’s snug but not too tight around the waist and legs. Add a liner if you prefer, for easier cleanup.

**Step 4: Changing the Nappy**

Change the nappy every 2-4 hours or when it's soiled. Remove the liner and dispose of it if it's disposable, or wash it if it's reusable. Place the used nappy in a wet bag or diaper pail until you’re ready to wash.

**Step 5: Washing the Nappies**

1. **Pre-wash:** Use a heated 40 or 60-degree short wash (45 min - 1 hour) with half a dose of detergent. For nappies worn overnight, use a 60-degree wash. Use the highest spin speed available on a front loader washing machine.

2. **Main Wash:** Wash at 40 degrees (maximum 60 degrees) with a full dose of detergent as per the package instructions for heavily soiled items. Ensure your washing machine is loosely full (closed fist at the top) and use your longest cotton cycle, not eco. Use the highest spin speed available on a front loader washing machine.

3. **Detergent:** Use liquid or powder detergent. Avoid detergents like ecover with low surfactants and high levels of soap.

4. **Drying:** Tumble dry on low if needed but avoid tumbling anything with PUL. Keep away from direct heat sources like radiators.

5. **Additional Tips:** Avoid nappy creams unless approved for cloth. Never use fabric softener, and remember that using bleach will void the warranty.

**Step 6: Storing Clean Nappies**

Once dry, store your cloth nappies in a clean, dry place. Folding them ahead of time can make nappy changes quicker and easier.

**Conclusion:**

Using cloth nappies is a rewarding choice for both your baby and the environment. With these simple steps, you’ll find that cloth nappies are not only easy to use but also a cost-effective and sustainable option. Remember, every small change makes a big difference!
